Nothing So Sweet as a Withered Rose

Maybe once, very very long ago, the garden would have been beautiful. And maybe once, there would have been the sweet scent of roses and tulips and other flowers that would have fluttered around the grounds, setting the scene for the light and happy. But that once was gone, so far gone, and the place where those flowers had once grown, was no over run by the weeds that had taken their places. Grass that once was trimmed back to an uncanny rigidness now grew in masses here and there that had the original caretaker seen the garden now, would have had a heart attack at the very sight of the mess that was now left in place of what once must have been an artistic creation of living beauty.

But Lorelei liked it this way better. The dark colors, the withered roses, stranged by the weeds, and flowers that were duller much more drab, seemed to fit her better. So much better. And the scent, so much more dangerous, a wild tangy scent that drifted not quite where you could smell it, but once you caught a whiff, you knew it was there. The wonderful scent of wilting roses, the scent that seemed to be synomous with death.

It's unique.

Cold green eyes turend to look at the sky, oppresively low with the clouds so filled and about spill out on the Lady beneath them. Her red hair, around her face, framed it like fire. And a heavy sigh shuddered through her body as Lorelei looked at the grounds around her. All that was hers and her Lord's.

"I really must remember to re-hire the gardener, if we haven't accidentally killed him." The Dark Lord had noticed Lorelei in the yard, and came down to join her there. "The place looks terrible. Hello, my dear. Welcome back." He kissed her hand cordially. "Tsk, someone should weed those roses, they're being choked off by weeds." A shame, he rather liked flowers.

"How have you been? One hears you've brought a pet back..." He left the half-question hanging, not pressing for details- yet.

Lorelei hadn't heard him come in. She would have heard anyone else, but he...she never did. When she heard his voice from behind her, a smile formed. It had been awhile since she'd seen him. Her little exploration to the port cities had taken longer than she had thought, and she had brought him back a little present, one that was sure to make her Lord happy.

Lorelei didn't pull her hand back from the kiss that Orfeo placed on it. Instead, she continued to slightly hold his hand, not much a menace, just more of a prescence. After a few heart beats, she did pull it back, and turned to scan the garden once more. If the gardener was dead, it would be hard to replace him. It was always hard to replace the people that needed some skill.

"Thank you. I agree. As for a pet, I have. He's a wonderful specimen of fallen heros. Pray tell, shall you meet him, love?"

Her green eyes that had been cold were not necessarily warm, but they were filled with some type of sadistic glee that came from the idea of showing her Port Prize to Lord Orfeo. Surely, he would see the same potential that she had. The way that dark part of his soul that could be twisted, already was being twisted, was so easily and readibly manipulatable. Oh, it would be fun.

And there's nothing like a fallen hero to crush the hopes of the people 'round.

And there wasn't. To the people, the good loving people, the ones that thought that good always won, watching a hero, so heavenly divine, fall and join the enemy was the worst of betrayls, the most sincere form of treachery, and smiting of all hope. It was so destructive, so perfect for Lorelei and Orfeo.

"A fallen hero, is it?" Orfeo smiled coldly. "How delightful." Those were such a delight, both to twist and to display. He hoped he'd be able to subvert one of the young royals to his side, but that would take time. Having a warrior, or any kind of hero, to present as his own would only add to his strength as ruler. Granted, the man (woman?) was Lorelei's, but he was sure she'd share, given the right incentives.

"I must hear the story of how his fall came about," He added, "and of course I'll see him. Now?"

"Truly he is. Such power but such darkness. He will be fun for the both of us."

Oh, and Lorelei was certain that he sure would be. The darkness that was so present in his heart, so very much growing would grow faster now. It would fester in the doubt and swirl in the depths of his mind, only to find the light a burden no longer wanted by his soul. It would be as Lorelei had thought it would.

"He was in the port lands, in a tavern. The sod had been there for some while, under the guise of a drunkard, and apparently falling more and more into the role. After a brief tussle, he has decided to join us, my Lord. As for seeing him, now is a good time. I am certain he would be able to see you without little problem."

Lorelei nodded to him, her a section of red hair lossing from the rest and floating before her eyes. She swiped it away and set it back with the rest before turning her green eyes to face Orfeo again. Surely her Lord would like her pet.

The Dark Lord nodded once, pleased with her. "Then let us go. Present your new toy to me, and we'll see what we can make of him." He turned away, cloak swirling, and waited for her to lead the way.
